Thomas Wentworth Higginson was a radical abolitionist and one of ~The Secret Six, who financially supported John Brown's Harper's Ferry raid in 1859. During the Civil War he was Colonel of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, the first federally authorized black regiment, from 1862"1864. After the war he was a American Unitarian minister and author.
