Timothy Pickering was a Massachusetts lawyer and veteran of the American Revolution. He aligned with the Federalists, serving in several cabinet positions including Secretary of State from 1795 to 1800. His support of the Federalist New England interests from 1801 though the War of 1812, put him as odds with Republican Presidents, Jefferson and Madison. As a Congressman from 1813-17, he led the New England secession movement
