Title Page of Thomas Paines, 1794 book, An Examination of the Age of Reason, or, An investigation of True and Fabulous Theology. The book challenged institutionalized religion and the legitimacy of the Bible. The extremely controversial book cost Paine much good will on both sides of the Atlantic. Paine returned to the US in 1802, where he died on June 8, 1809, still ostracized for this book
