The Turnip Day session of the Special Session

The Turnip Day session of the Special Session of Congress called by President Harry Truman. He challenged the Republican majority of the Do-Nothing Congress to live up to their election year pledges: pass laws to ensure civil rights; extend Social Security coverage; establish a national health-care program. That two-week session would begin on what Missourians called Turnip Day, taken from the old Missouri saying, On the twenty-fifth of July, sow your turnips, wet or dry. (BSLOC_2015_2_239)
