Tuskegee Institute in 1907, was establish in 1881 to train African American school teachers. Its new principle, Booker T. Washington, began classes in a rundown church. In time, Washington established a network of wealthy American philanthropists, including Carnegie and Rockefeller, to help support the college (BSLOC_2017_20_129)
