Union Admiral John Worden was a career officer in the US Navy from 1834 to 1886. As a Lieutenant he was assigned the command of the USS Monitor, the iron clad gunboat that fought the CSS Virginia in the Battle of Hampton Roads, March 8-9, 1862, during the US Civil War.
