Union Major General Henry W. Halleck, c. 1860-65. He commanded operations in the Western Theater of the US Civil War from 1861-62. Halleck was Brig. General Ulysses Grants superior during the Union victories at Fort Henry, Fort Donelson, and Shiloh. He became General-in-Chief of all the Union armies after McClellans failed Peninsula Campaign, and Chief of Staff during the last year of the war, after Grant became General-in-Chief. Photo John A.
