Union scouts and guides at Army of the Potomac
Union scouts and guides at Army of the Potomac winter quarters, Brandy Station, Virginia, in March 1864. These men were part of the Bureau of Military Intelligence, headed by Gen. George Sharpe. They gathered information on the Confederate army and operations. Their leader, Sergeant Milton Cline sits in the center, in uniform. The rest are dressed for their covert work.
