Sharpe became head of the Army of the Potomacs bureau of Military Information in March 1863. He was first hired by General Joseph Hooker, then served Gen. George Meade, and finally reported to Ulysses Grant for the duration of the US Civil War. His post war career included an investigation of New York City voting that proved widespread fraud, which contributed to the downfall of Boss William Tweed
