United States pensioners in line at the Pension
United States pensioners in line at the Pension Office in the New York Custom-House, 1866. Most are adult men, some are disabled, a few are women, and several wear military forage caps. Union disabled veterans, dead soldiers widows and children, received pensions as early as 1862. The South left such pensions to the individual states, who were constrained by the Souths post war economic problems
