The USS Merrimack, was a 60 gun steam frigate, commissioned in 1856 and named for the Merrimack River. She was burned on April 20, 1861, before the Confederates captured the Norfolk Navy Yard. They salvaged her hull for conversion to the ironclad gunboat, the CSA Virginia, during the US Civil War
