USS Philadelphia under construction in south Philadelphia, 1798-99. She was a 1240-ton, 36-gun sailing frigate, for the United States Navy government. Money for her construction came from a citizen fund drive which raised $100, 000 in June 1798. Her keel was laid down in Nov. 1798, she was launched in Nov. 28, 1799, and commissioned in April 5, 180, with Captain Stephen Decatur, Sr. as her commander, She met her end in Tripoli Harbor, during the First Barbary War, Feb. 16, 1804
