On his third voyage to the New World, 1498-1500, Christopher Columbus, then Governor of the West Indies, executed mutinous Spanish sailors and colonists on Hispaniola in 1498. A priest is restrained from intervening, while men in the background fight. The mutineers would defend their actions to Spanish authorities by accusing Columbus and his brother Bartholomew of brutality and gross misgovernance
