War of 1812. American privateer ship, General Armstrong, repulsed boatloads of British boarding parties in Fayal Harbor, Azores, Sept. 26, 1814. Ship Captain Samuel Chester Reid eventually scuttled the ship, after the British suffered 250 casualties to General Armstrongs 9. His crew was protected by neutral Portuguese authorities
