War of 1812. Battle of Plattsburgh, aka, Battle of Lake Champlain, Sept. 11, 1814. A British Squadron of four warships and twelve gunboats are in line for battle against American flotilla commanded by Capt. Thomas McDonough in Plattsburg Bay on Lake Champlain. The US won the battle, which caused British General George Provost to canceled the invasion of Plattsburgh by his force of 9, 000. McDonoughs victory also offset the impact of the British burning of Washington at the Peace talks in Ghent, Belgium
