War of 1812. The Burning of Washington, DC. British soldiers easily overwhelmed the American militia defenders of Washington DC, at the Battle of Bladensburg. After capturing the capital city, they burned US government buildings in retaliation for similar US actions in York, the capital of Upper Canada. August 24, 1814
