War of 1812, Storming of Fort George, May 27, 1813. US soldiers charging up embankment on the Niagara River shoreline to assault the artillery defending the fort. Fort George was captured under the leadership of Gen. Winfield Scott, Gen. Henry Dearborn, and Commodore Oliver Perry. The Fort was defended by 1, 300 British soldiers, and attacked by 4, 000 US soldiers. Killed and wounded were roughly equal for each side, but proportionately larger for the smaller British force
