War of 1812. United States Frigate President, captained by Stephen Decatur, is pursued by a British HMS Endymion, a 40-gun frigate, Jan. 15, 1815. Presidents artillery was hindered by a damaged hull. Eventually the Endymion caught up to Decatur, who managed to shoot into her rigging. When two other ships of the British squadron came into cannon range, Decatur surrendered the President.
