Wichita Indian grass house near Anadarko
Wichita Indian grass house near Anadarko, Oklahoma. The beehive-shaped grass lodges were built over a framework of long wooden vertical poles made from small trees. Rows of smaller branches ran horizontally across the poles, to which the thatch was attached in layers from bottom to top. Their structure is related to the earth covered structures of the Northern Plains Indians, but the grass was suitable in the warmer Southern Plains of Kansas and Texas
