Wilberforce University, Xenia, Ohio, 1856-60

Wilberforce University, Xenia, Ohio, 1856-60, was founded in a converted hotel on 54 acres of a resort property. It offered a curriculum of classical studies and teacher training African Americans. It was affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church and the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Many of the pre-Civil War students were the acknowledged and loved mixed race children of wealthy southern men and their African American mistresses
