William Henry Seward as Secretary of State
William Henry Seward as Secretary of State for Abraham Lincoln, 1861-65. He was an anti- slavery moderates, favoring gradual ending of slavery throughout the United States. Seward New York State home was in Auburn, a center of abolitionist activity. In 1857, the Seward and his abolitionist wife, Frances, provided a home for Tubman, where she brought members of her family she freed from slavery
