William Lloyd Garrison, the prominent American abolitionist, ca. 1850, daguerreotype by Southworth and Hawes, Boston. Garrisons started his profession as a printer and editor of a local newspaper in Newburyport, Mass. He moved to Boston, then a center of the Temperance reform movements. Garrison, the founder of THE LIBERATOR, established himself as a writer and editor of a temperance newspaper in the late 1820s
