Ten women teachers of freedmen in front of Mission House, Beaufort, SC, in 1862. They were sent by the American Missionary Association of New York in response to Gen. Thomas W. Shermans General Order No. 9, requesting teachers for the ex-slaves. Two African American boys stand at left, hiding their faces with caps. Mission House, was previously known as The Anchorage, or Elliot House, at 1103 Bay Street. During the Civil War occupation, it was also used a Union Army hospital. Photo by Sam Cooley
