World War 1 in East Asia. Some of the 3, 000 German defenders of Tsingtao, a German colony seized from China in 1897. For six weeks they resisted 50, 000 Japanese soldiers. The Battle ended with 200 Germans killed to a Japanese death toll of 1, 455. The soldier second from right appears to have Jewish ancestry. Sept.-Oct. 1914. (BSLOC_2013_1_11)
