World War 1 German and Austrian resident aliens in detention, under transfer from Fort McPherson to Fort Oglethorpe, c. 1918. Of the large German-American population, only 2, 300 dangerous enemy aliens were held in War Department camps. Other German nationals were subject to restrictions on their freedom of movement, compulsory registration with the government, prohibition on owning radios and firearms
