YORK (TORONTO) THE INTENDED CAPITOL OF UPPER CANADA, by Edward Walsh, 1803. York was named the permanent capital of British Upper Canada in 1796. The name of Toronto was dropped in favor the English place name of York, until the City of Toronto was incorporated on March 6, 1834
