Zachary Taylor, 12th President of the United States, served from 1849 to his death on July 9, 1850. William Garl Browne Jr. painted this portrait in Aug. 1847 in Monterrey, Mexico, where Taylor remained with his sidelined army, after President Polk's elevation of General Winfield Scott for the Mexican City campaign. General Taylor wears non-dress military clothing in the painting, commissioned by a Taylor political supporter, to position Taylor as a candidate for the US presidency in 1848 (BSIC_2020_12_38)
