Destruction of Guernica, Spanish Civil War, Spain

Aerial view of the bombed city of Guernica following an attack by the German Kondor Legion of aircraft on 26 April 1937. The civilian death toll of the Republican city has been estimated at between 250 to 300. Nationalists claimed that the destruction had been caused by Republicans burning the town as they fled, and the Falangist publication from which this image comes states that the blackened skeleton of the city offered incontrovertible proof of the sadistic nature of Marxism
