PEDRO FERNANDES DE QUIROS, Portuguese navigator, sailed from Peru, in search of a southern continent, and discovered the New Hebrides, thinking it part of what was later called Australia (from the name he gave it, Terra Australis del Espiritu Santo). He had to leave almost immediately for the return sail after his crew mutinied
