Robert Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon and Lady Eden leaving thir London home in Carlton Gardens. A few hours later Sir Anthony had accepted the Premiership from the Queen in succession to Sir Winston Churchill. An opponent of the appeasement of Nazi Germany, Anthony Eden was Foreign Secretary three times between 1935 and 1955. His last spell earned him promotion to Prime Minster, where his career was overshadowed by the Suez Crisis in 1956. His reputation was never to recover following his poor handling of the affair
