Comparison of the automatic rifle and German's automatic pistol shown in this diagram. The length of the automatic rifle and the narrowness of the trenches greatly hinder the usefulness in hand to hand work, the pistol being a superior weapon. This applied especially to the automatic pistol - as distinguised from the revolver - on account of its greater accuracy and repidity of fire, together with less labour and the rifle needing cartridge magazines that could be emptied from the shoulder
