Essaouira, Morocco - tourists landing
Essaouira (formerly Mogador) - tourist resort on the Western Moroccan region of Marrakesh on the Atlantic coast - occupied since prehistoric times. A good anchorage, Carthagian navigator Hanno established trading post here in the 5th century BC. Famous for the shells which produced the dye of the purple stripe in Imperial Roman senatorial togas. Jews once comprised 40% of the population (see: 10982443)
