First Serbian Uprising of 1804

Scene from the First Serbian Uprising, the first stage of the Serbian Revolution, the ultimately successful wars of independence that lasted for 9 years and approximately 9 months (1804-1813), during which Serbia perceived itself as an independent state for the first time (after more than three centuries of Ottoman rule and short-lasting Austrian occupations). Here can be seen an attack led by Veljko Petrovic (c. 1780-1813), known simply as Hajduk Veljko, one of the vojvodas (military commanders) of the Serbian Revolutionary forces, in charge of the Negotin area. He was one of the biggest heroes of the Uprising
