Gray's Monument - Stoke Poges. The inscription reads: This Monument In honour of Thomas Gray was errected A.D. 1788 among the scenes celebrated by that great lyric and elegant Poet. He died July 30th 1771 and lies unnoticed in the graveyard adjoining under the tombstone on which he piously and pathetically recorded the interment of his Aunt and lamented Mother. Gray was best known for his poem Elegy in a Country Church Yard, which is also transcribed on this plinth
