The Island of the Dead
The Island of the Dead was the destination for all who died inside the prison camps at former convict settlement on the Tasman Peninsula, in Tasmania, Australia. Of the 1646 graves recorded to exist there, only 180, those of prison staff and military personnel, are marked. The prison closed in 1877. The convicts and paupers are buried on the lower side of the Island close to the water and the free people are buried on the higher ground
