The monument bears the likenesses of British naval commander-in-chief in the Mediterranean, Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Codrington, the French Admiral Henri de Rigny (pictured here) and a Russian Admiral Lodewijk Heyden, on either side there is a Turkish and a Venetian canon. Pylos was the site of the battle of Navarino, the turning point in Greece's War of Independence
