The rooftops of Sanliurfa, Turkey
Sanliurfa (often simply known as Urfa in daily language), formerly cited as Edessa in in Aramaic, Riha in Kurdish, and Urhay in Armenian) is a city in south-eastern Turkey, and the capital of Sanliurfa Province. This postcard dates from the French occupation of this area (hence the French caption). The 12th century Grand Mosque in Urfa (Ulu Cami) can be seen in the centre of the picture. This interesting edifice was erected on the site of the former Church of St Stephen. A synagogue is believed to have preceded the church
