Russian Monument - San Stefano, Constantinople
The Exterior and interior of the imposing Russian monument, set up in San Stefano, Constantinople to commemorate the conclusion of the Treaty of San Stefano (of March 1878) - used as ossuary to the Russian soldiers fallen during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-8. Considered to be arrogant by the Turks who had not digested this defeat, this monument was removed in 1914, after the beginning of the hostilities between Russia and the Ottoman Empire within the framework of the First World War. ~~~~
