Taira no Shigemori fighting Minamoto no Yoshihira
An episode during the Heiji Rebellion, a short civil war between rival subjects of the cloistered Emperor Go-Shirakawa of Japan in 1160 fought in order to resolve a dispute about political power. Taira no Shigemori led an attack on the Imperial Palace, which was held by the Minamoto. Shigemori was fiercely pursued by Minamoto no Yoshihira. The pair are shown here both on horseback, galloping through the snowy grounds of the palace, with Shigemori in the lead. He bends low over the side of his mount, his bow held in his opposite hand
