Val d'Ossau muscians
Val d'Ossau men playing traditional local instruments to accompany dances. On the right we have a fiddler with his fiddle and on the right, the taller gentleman is playing a Psalterium (Psaltery) or tambourin a cordes, a stringed instrument tuned to provide drone chords. Sometimes called a string drum, it is usually used as rhythm accompaniment with a form of tabor pipe, as can be seen on this card. It is known in France as a tambourin de Bearn or ttun-ttun in Basque
