Cunard Line, RMS Lusitania - assorted items. Extremely important archive relating to Senior 5th Engineer William Affleck Anderson who drowned when the Lusitania was torpedoed by the German submarine U20. The collection contains his Continuous Certificate of Discharge, the final entry being 23 April 1913 (his subsequent book was lost in the sinking), photos of the Lusitania and Mr Anderson, in memoriam cards, Lusitania Memorial Dedication Programme and a letter dated 14 May 1915 from the Marine Engineers Association offering their sincere sympathy on Mr Anderson's death. Two of the rarest elements of the archive are a WW1 British Deadman's Penny'. These were issued to next of kin of service personnel who were killed as a result of enemy action. Also included is a letter written on board the Lusitania less than two months before her ill-fated final voyage, written over four sides. The content includes the sentence We didn't sight any submarines or anything of the sort'. Provenance via direct descent.
