RMS Titanic - gold pocket watch, Captain Rostron
RMS Titanic - an important 18 carat gold pocket watch, the case stamped no. 40198 and the Swiss level movement no. 71072, made for Tiffany and Co New York by Touchon and Co of Switzerland, the reverse with enamelled monogram AHR, the inside of the case inscribed Presented to Captain Rostron with the heartfelt gratitude and appreciation of three survivors of the Titanic April 15th 1912 Mrs John B. Thayer, Mrs John Jacob Astor and Mrs George D. Widener. The lunch where the watch was presented to Captain Rostron is recorded in the New York Times, dated Sunday 2 June 1912. Captain Arthur Henry Rostron of the rescue ship Carpathia received this gold watch from Mrs John Jacob Astor at the informal lunch that she gave in his honour at her home, 840 Fifth Avenue. A souvenir of her appreciation of what he did for her comfort and for all the survivors of the Titanic'.
