: RMS Titanic, table of English composer Archibald Joyce

RMS Titanic, table of English composer Archibald Joyce

An important piece of musical and Titanic history, a late 19th/early 20th century oak barley twist gateleg table on which the composer and English Waltz King Archibald Joyce (1873-1963) composed and wrote Songe d'Automne (Dream of Autumn), thought by some to be the last piece of music played on the deck of the Titanic as she was sinking in the early hours of 15 April 1912 (surviving Marconi operator Harold Bride recalled hearing it as the ship sank). The table has been in the possession of the direct descendants of Joyce, the present vendor is the great niece of Archibald, as her grandfather on her mother's side was Bertram Joyce, the brother of Archibald and a composer in his own right under the name Manton Bennett. The lot is accompanied with framed sheet music by Manton Bennett, Fun By Moonlight, and a letter of provenance from the vendor. The table measures 41ins. x 52uins. (extended) x 28oins. Songe d'Automne was included in the repertoire for White Star Line orchestras
