A wooden carving of Michael Kohlhaas, in the town of Juterbog, in the state of Brandenburg, Germany. Kohlhaas (also known as Hans Kohlhase), was a 16th century merchant whose horses were taken from him. Unable to gain justice through the legal system, he took action which escalated into a terror campaign throughout the whole of Saxony. He was eventually caught and executed. His story was popularised by the 19th century novelist, Heinrich von Kleist
