Drums and Fifes by H.M. Bateman
An old man, dozing on a bench, is disturbed by the distant sound of the drums and fifes of a marching military band. Suffused with patriotism, he races off to find them and falls in, marching alongside. Published in The Tatler in the opening weeks of the Second World War, Bateman's choice of subject seems to have an underlying patriotism
