Overheard at the docks by H. M. Bateman
A man asking directions to the newly built cruise ship the Queen Mary, a reference to the immense size of the ship (the man is stood right next to it). Bateman (1887-1970) was a popular artist and regularly contributed to the Sketch, the Tatler and the Bystander. His efficient, bold style depicting social faux-pas was ground breaking for its time and his work is a brilliant reflection of the period
