Billy's Babel, 1791
Britannia is crushed underneath a tower of taxes, crying Tis More Than I can Bear'. King George III, Prime Minister William Pitt and the Archbishop of Canterbury surround the tower. When Pitt came into office he inherited the burden of national debt, which had doubled to ?243 million during the American war. Pitt sought to reduce the debt by imposing new taxes, and by 1792 the debt had fallen to ?170 million
