"Hand-painted black silk fan with a border of black lace and ebony sticks. The silk is painted with very fine green sprays, the leaves interspersed with tiny green spangles. In the centre are three butterflies and on either side of these, birds in flight or sitting among leafy boughs; those on the left, among grasses and flowers"
