The Glorious First of June 1794
King George III presents a sword to Admiral Earl Howe, who defeated and captured six French ships. Howe's victory came at a critical time for British morale; the French army was superior in battle, and the threat of invasion was ever present. When the captured ships were towed into Portsmouth there was a period of national celebration
