Heraldic shield, Hampton Court Palace, 1536
Fragment of a Reigate stone heraldic shield found at Hampton Court Palace, excavated from the moat in 1909-10. Showing the arms of Jane Seymour: a gateway, hawthorn tree and golden phoenix. The shield would have been held by one of the King's Beasts on the moat bridge, at the entrance to the palace. The beasts were constructed in 1536 as part of King Henry VIII's expansion of the palace and to commemorate his marriage to his third wife, Jane Seymour
